Quadrophenia is a 1979 British drama film, based on the Who's 1973 rock opera of the same name. It was directed by Franc Roddam in his feature directing debut, starring Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash, Toyah, Philip Davis, Mark Wingett, Sting and Ray Winstone. Unlike the adaptation of Tommy, Quadrophenia is not a musical film, and the band does not appear live in the film.
The film, set in London in 1964, depicts a period of emotional turmoil in the life of Jimmy Cooper, a young mod who escapes from his dead-end job as a postroom boy by dancing, partying, taking amphetamines, riding his scooter and brawling with rockers.
After his Mod and Rocker gang clashes with rivals on Brighton beach, Jimmy experiences a personal crisis as he loses his girlfriend, his job, and his idol, the stylish "Ace Face" who is revealed to be a bellhop. The film culminates in a destructive act by Jimmy, as he launches Ace Face's scooter off a cliff, leading him on a downward spiral of depression and recklessness before revealing a full-circle ending.
“Drugs and filthy pictures! Running riot everywhere! You're a little animal, you are. You wanna be locked up! I've done my best, look what I've got for it! A bloody mad thing! You're a little savage!”
