Escape to Victory (or simply Victory) is a sports war film directed by John Huston and starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Max von Sydow and Pelé, ably supported by a plethora of footballing superstars including Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, Kazimierz Deyna, Paul Van Himst, Mike Summerbee, Hallvar Thoresen, and Werner Roth. Numerous Ipswich Town players were also in the film, including John Wark, Russell Osman, Laurie Sivell, Robin Turner and Kevin O'Callaghan.
The head of a German POW camp, soccer enthusiast Karl von Steiner (Max von Sydow), organises a match between Nazi players and their Allied captives. Orchestrated as a way to push the Third Reich agenda, the high-profile game is set to feature an international team led by John Colby (Michael Caine), a veteran British player. While the team, which also includes Luis Fernandez (Pelé) of Trinidad, trains for the match, Robert Hatch (Sylvester Stallone) plans a dangerous mass escape from the camp.
“This frigging game is ruining my life.”
