Excalibur is a 1981 epic dark medieval fantasy film directed, co-written and produced by John Boorman, that retells the legend of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table. It stars Nigel Terry as Arthur, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Paul Geoffrey as Perceval and Nicol Williamson as Merlin. The film is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur that features prominently in Arthurian literature.

Forged in the early days of the world, Excalibur is the mystical sword of power that has existed since the dawn of time. Once bestowed upon Uther Pendragon by the powerful wizard Merlin, it was intended to unite the land under one ruler. Instead, when violent lust for another woman plunged the country into chaos, the precious Excalibur, a weapon that was meant to heal, was cast into stone. Now, the one who can draw it will be king. This man is Arthur, a humble squire and Uther's illegitimate son. With the Knights of the Round Table, only he can bring peace and prosperity to the kingdom. However, every hero has a fatal flaw. As pride and desire cloud judgment, Arthur's deceitful half-sister, Morgana, emerges, threatening to tear the land apart again. And if sin is their downfall, a king without his sword is nothing.

"No mortal could possess it! No kingdom could command it! Forged by a god. Foretold by a wizard. Found by a king."
