An American neo-noir mystery film directed by Roman Polanski. The film stars Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. It was inspired by the California water wars, a series of disputes over Southern California water at the beginning of the 20th century. This was Polanski's last film in the United States and features many elements of film noir.

When a Los Angeles private eye is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband's activities, he believes it's a routine infidelity case, the investigation soon becomes anything but routine when he meets the real Mrs Mulwray and realises he was hired by an imposter. Mr Mulwray's sudden death sets him on a tangled trail of corruption, deceit and sinister family secrets.
